Introduction to the Minor Program of “Art & Cultural Creativity”

Following the tradition of humanism and art and based on the multi-disciplinary platform that Nanjing University boasts, the School of the Arts set up the liberal arts experimental class in Art & Cultural Creativity in September 2016. Since then, the class has taken up the reformed “3+3 training plan,” and upheld the education philosophy of “four-pronged integration”. The “Art & Cultural Creativity” minor program is an interdisciplinary innovative training program jointly launched by the Undergraduate School of Nanjing University and the School of Arts. Featuring cultural creativity theories and combining them with enriched practices, this program aims to enhance students’ artistic quality, broaden their horizons on culture, and inspire their innovative thinking and entrepreneurial practice. Students will be awarded a certificate for this minor program after two years of study.

 

The School of the Arts boasts a competitive edge in integrating art theory research with artistic creation practice, with a cherry-picked, dedicated, and highly-competent faculty team. There are 51 faculty members in the School of the Arts, including 14 professors (9 doctoral supervisors), 11 associate professors, 1 associate research librarian , and 12 research fellows. Especially, there is 1 senior professor of liberal arts at Nanjing University, 1 foreign academician of the European Academy of Sciences, 2 distinguished Professors of the Changjiang Scholars Program, 2 professors who have won the Changjiang Young Scholar award, and 1 professor who has been awarded “the Cultural Masters and the Four First-Batch Talents,” 1 professor who is the member of the first tier of “3-3-3 Talents Project” of Jiangsu Province. With subsidiaries including the Cultural Creativity Laboratory, Art Education Research Institute, and other professional scientific research institutions, the School of the Arts maintains close partnerships with colleges and art organizations at home and abroad, cultural institutions such as museums and galleries, and government organs. The School of Arts is one of the tops in China regarding its alignment with international standards and social devotion.

 

Based on the academic advantages of the School of Arts, the minor program of “Art & Cultural Creativity” aims to improve students' humanistic quality and solidify their academic foundation in art through the education of culture and art theories. Adopting an innovative talent training mode of “classroom teaching + vocational practice + international exchanges”, this program features creation practice and cultural industry courses that cultivate students’ mindset and skillset of innovation and entrepreneurship. The social practice in this program is designed to strengthen students' ability to apply theories to practices and adapt to changes. The customized and diversified training system of this program aims to foster pragmatic, creation-driven, and all-round talented people who are not only keen on artistic appreciation and creativity but also capable of research, planning, execution, and management.

 

This program is open for application to all full-time second or third-year undergraduate students of Nanjing University. Only qualified candidates will be enrolled in this program. This program lasts two years (three semesters for teaching and one semester for graduation thesis writing). This program adopts a training mode of “classroom teaching + vocational practice + international exchanges,” including the subject courses on the platform, the core courses for the major, the professional practice, and the graduation thesis, as well as a workshop on the theme of art and cultural creativity (which usually lasts two weeks, including teaching, visit, investigation, and presentation of the research findings). This program adopts a credit system, where students should complete no less than 30 credits of the required courses, and fully participate in the program before being awarded the certificate of the program.
